For instance, every Medicare Advantage plan offers coverage for emergency care and for all care that is considered to be urgently needed. This coverage may be provided even if you receive that care at a facility that is not part of the plan’s network.

Most of the Advantage plans provide Medicare Part D coverage. This is coverage for prescription drugs. You may have that same coverage with your Medicare basic plan. If that is the case, you will be required to either drop that Part D coverage from Medicare or to drop your Medicare Advantage plan. There is overlap between the plans, but they are not allowed to overlap for Part D coverage.

2018 Medicare Advantage PlansWhere the 2018 Medicare Advantage plans really differ is when it comes to procedures and types of care that are not deemed medically necessary. Some of the plans will cover some of these kinds of expenses while others will not. Their definition of medically necessary may change depending on the state, as this kind of definition is decided by individual states. What is covered under one plan in Tennessee may not be covered by the same plan in New Hampshire.

You should be aware of the coverage a plan offers before you sign up for it. Don’t assume that these plans are all the same. Also note that the coverage can vary depending on which healthcare facility you go to. If your healthcare provider is not on the plan’s network, you may not be covered at all for the medical expenses you accrued while there, even if those expenses are usually covered by your plan. That’s because many Advantage plans operate on a closed network. Depending on the type of plan you have, you may be covered partially for care at a facility outside the network, but for the most part, you won’t be covered at all, except in the case of an emergency.

It is essential that you know what kind of coverage your Advantage plan will provide and where you will be covered with that plan before you subscribe to it. You may some trouble changing out or dropping the plan after you sign up, so you want to be sure about it. Take time to look at the plan and your other options as far as 2018 Medicare Advantage Plans go. You should try to find a plan you won’t regret later and one that gives you the kind of coverage that saves you money and provides peace of mind.
